This PowerPoint presentation was developed by Scott Simonds. The compressed zip file is 2.5 MB. It was created in PowerPoint XP (2002). If you try to open it in an earlier version the animations do not work properly. The graphics will all be there, but they appear out of sequence.

Note: If you do not have PowerPoint XP, you can download a free viewer from Microsoft. The current location is at www.microsoft.com/downloads/ .

Scott didn't have time to write detail lecture notes. If someone wants to use the slideshow, send Scott an email and he can go over the details of the slides.

Here is a rough presentation outline and some notes from Scott's email message on Home Harbor Inn.

Title: FFWPU and Korea

I. Historical and Religious background of Korea

- Geography (located between USSR, China, Japan)
- 5000 Years old
- Invaded over 500 times
- "Vortex of Global Confrontation"

A. Religious Background

- Shamanism (similar to Native American - note: indians came across the Aleutian islands long before Europeans got here) Close to nature and keenly aware of spiritual world (I testified about a well educated woman who can see SW)
- Bhuddism
- Confucianism (introduce idea that Confucious taught that there was a "heavenly blueprint" for families, communities etc. - similar to Socrates and Plato. This theme gets picked up later)
- Christianity - Info from source on FFWPU website about Christianity in Korea. Key points: Confucian Scholars brought Christianity to Korea - they sought it out and studied with Jesuits in Japan and China. Catholicism came first, then protestantism in later 1800s. Protestantism became associated with national liberation movement. After WWII, Christianity exploded. Largest church in the world is in Seoul, 700,000 members. (testimonies about depth of Christian faith)

B. Political

From "Anti-Japanese Movement in Korea" on ffwpu website

Japan drove out Russians in 1904, then stayed. Japan and Roosevelt made an agreement. Japan gets Korea, US gets Philipines. Japanese killed off heads of Korean military. A resistance army forms and anti-Japanese government goes into exile. Other Koreans stay and cooperate with Japanese to make peace. They are viewed as traitors by majority of Koreans.

As protestantism grows, liberation movement grows. 1919, Christians take to the streets and demonstrate. They drafted a declaration of independence modeled after US Declaration of Independence. They think US will support them. Wilson is more interested in keeping peace with Japan, and doesn't help. The Japanese torture and kill off thousands of Christian demonstrators. US is silent.

After WWII, US bungles relationship with Koreans. General Hodge, who is placed in charge in Korea, views Koreans as "conquered enemies", no different than Japanese. He favors Koreans who cooperated with the Japanese during Japanese occupation. Rhee, who was out of favor with exiled independence leaders, convinces Hodge that other members of the exiled Korean leadership are communists. Meanwhile, the communists are supported by Russia which is anti-Japanese and supports Korean independence.

Anti-American and Anti-Japanese sentiments are brewing like a powder keg. Communist activity intensifies. US strikes a deal at Yalta and Potsdam conferences with Russia to divide occupation at the 38th parallel. North Korea invades South - Korean War. Conflict is resolved by withdrawing back to the 38th parallel. South becomes an economic miracle during reconstruction, north becomes Stalinist dictatorship.

II. Korea today

- Christianity flourishing in the south - militant atheism in the north - Economic miracle in the south - economic basket case in the north (show satellite picture taken at night - south all lit up, north completely dark) - Generation gap (used image of old woman cutting hair of grandson from movie "The Way Home" - used that image as a metaphor for traditional Korean culture vs modernity) - Lingering resentment against US because of compromises with Japan and Russia.

III. Korea as a microcosm for world peace

- Familiar and comfortable with different faiths - Last front line between Christian-democracy and Atheistic-Communism - Meeting point of East and West - Mediator among races (respected by both black and white, also close to Pacific Islanders and Native Americans) - Culture of "heart" - Strong families

IV. International Federations

- UC is not an end unto itself - it is a catalyst for change. The result of the 40 year history of the UC is the emergence of several international, inter-religious organizations for world peace. Key point - Korea cannot be at peace unless the world is at peace.

A - International Federation for World Peace

(explain about Summit Council and Int'l Highway as a signature project)

B - Inter-Religious Federation for World Peace

(started with "God Conference" - now helps behind the scenes to mediate inter-religious conflicts)

C - Women's Federation for World Peace

(bridge of peace ceremonies, promoting a family culture beyond national and religious boundaries)

- Above are NGOs recognized and active with the UN

D - Family Federation for World Peace "World Peace through Ideal Families"

1 Blessing of Marriage Movement - started in UC, but became inter-religious through ACLC and IRFWP (explain vows)
2 Purity Movement - abstinence based character education. Preparation for marriage and family. (Note purity in Korean culture and success of purity movement in Africa to fight AIDS - especially Uganda)

V. Guiding Principles - foundation for inter-religious and international harmony

A. Godism

- God's Heart and the human heart are designed to resonate. Religion aims to achieve resonance.

B. The Original Blueprint

- There is an original blueprint for human relationships centering on the ideal family.
- Refer back to Socrates, Confucious and biblical references
- Pope called family the first school of love, ethics and morality
- community and family of nations are extensions of the ideal family

C. Original dwelling place of God is in the individual (temple of God) and in the family.

Goal of religion (to "rebind") is to return to the original blueprint. Once that blueprint is realized, then God's sovereignty is restored and the original value of human beings is also restored.

D. Culture of "Ownership" or "Kingship".

Each person, as a unique expression of God's image, is "king" or "queen" of his/her chosen sphere of influence. Elders are "kings" of the past. Contemporaries are "kings" of the present. And children are "princes" and "princesses" of the future.

VI. Conclusion

May God bless you and your family
(Show family federation graphic - then I imposed crowns on the graphic over the positions of God, then grandparents, then parents, then children). This is the "proclamation of God's Kingship and the Kingship of Blessed Families".
